Build on the past – Rocky Mountain Featherbed
Rocky Mountain Featherbed, born in Wyoming, USA in the late 1960s. Its signature down jacket, featuring a Western yoke crafted from a single piece of leather inspired by Native American leather capes, was highly regarded, particularly among cowboys. Then, in the late 1980s, the brand closed its doors.
Years later, in 2005, Japan's 35 SUMMERS Co., Ltd. revived it, sparking its popularity not only in Japan but also in the United States and around the world. Based on the vast collection of Kinji Teramoto, renowned as one of Japan's foremost vintage collectors, the brand has achieved a magnificent revival and continuation, faithfully reproducing the originals while surpassing its quality.
The outer shell was developed through repeated trial and error, dismantling and studying vintage pieces to recreate their texture, ultimately arriving at the current 70-denier nylon taffeta. By increasing the stitch density beyond standard nylon fabrics, achieved a high-density construction that prevents down leakage. And prioritized the breathability to allow the down to breathe, rather than using a coating. To add more, we employ a special “calendaring” treatment involving high pressure and heat, resulting in a smooth surface.
The symbolic single-piece leather shoulder yoke features a hybrid design that combines traditional tanning with modern chrome tanning. This process preserves the authentic character of classic leather goods while also providing enhanced durability against rain and scratches.
Rocky Mountain Featherbed has been revived through meticulous adjustments to fit and silhouette, preserving its classic charm while elevating every detail to a masterpiece showcasing the brilliance of Japanese craftsmanship. It has truly been reborn without denying the past, living in the present, and transforming into a product that carries forward into the future.
Another big “yank” from Japan – BIG YANK
In 1919, the workwear brand BIG YANK was born. Under founder Milton F. Goodman, practical shirts featuring cotton chin straps appeared. At the time, the selection of materials reflected a keen aesthetic sense and rigorous standards, such as adopting fabrics from trusted suppliers.
The prototype for functional garments—combining utility and quality through techniques like rolled seams, three-needle stitching, and ventilation holes—took shape during this era. Then, in the 1980s, the brand's history came to a halt, only to be revived in 2012 by Kinji Teramoto.
Drawing on his vast collection of materials, he meticulously recreated everything from the sewing techniques and fabrics of the era to the name tags and intricate details. Not merely a reissue, but reconstructed from a contemporary perspective, evolving into a brand embraced by many fans and workwear enthusiasts. A new chapter has begun.
